Round 1 Tipsters' News, 2009

Welcome to season 2009. We have about 209 paid up tippers, according to the March 29 MUCU internet bank statement. There were 230 players last year and I expect a few more late recruits. An excellent start. Thanks to the vast majority of people who paid via direct debit to the Melb University Credit Union. Simple, efficient, easy. Much appreciated.

Once again, MUCU does not display the reference field for MUCU internal transfers but Tracy has been very helpful in identifying subscribers. This is an improvement over last year where they did not display either internal or external transactions.

Weekly prize, with 209 tippers, works out at $252 (leaving $715 for end of season prizes with guaranteed $300 for first in the ratio 13:8:5:3:2 down to 5th). This means every additional 7.5 tippers raises the weekly payout by about $10. It is not too late for a second entry or another family member or join.

Mind you, 220 people tipped. Please note that if you haven't paid, you can't win the weekly prize.

Tipping draws seems to be a thing of the past thanks to the tweak to the software last year which not prompts you to confirm you really want a draw.

Now for the tipping:

Congratulations to Dianna Gu (ext) who tipped all eight winners over the weekend. She wins $252 (likely to rise as a few more tipsters pay up). Please supply your bank details to faciltate payment - on Wednesday, once the tribunal has given the all clear.

According to the tipping ratio statistics there was one major upset: Adelaide (8.6%) defeated Collingwood at the MCG. Other "highlights" of the weekend included the massive build up to the Carlton Richmond (Judd vs Cousins, former team mates, both Brownlow medalists) which ended very badly for Richmond suffering a 14 goal defeat and Cousins pinging his hamstring again, in front of 90,000 people at The G.

The second game of the round was the Grand Final rematch which did live up to expectations with Geelong just getting home, Ablett best on ground with 35 possessions (15 in the first quarter) and Franklin 5 goals, Roughhead 4 goals. Geelong has won 44 of its last 47 matches.

Collingwood and Adelaide played a nail biter of a game, scores equal at three quarter time and only 3 goals scored in the final term, Adeliade winning by 4 points, the umps robbing the Pies blind.

Michael Voss won his first game as coach of Brisbane with a come from (a long way) behind including a 9 goal third quarter. Travis Johnston picked up 37 possessions and Jonathan Brown 3 goals.

St Kilda started the season with a win over the Swans keeping them goaless in both the second and third quarters in a dour low scoring affair.

The Western Bulldogs won away in Perth kicking a big score against the Dockers using 11 different goal scorers with Mitch Hahn kicking 5. The average score for the round was 5.63. The RAT (Random Tipper) tipped six.

Note: tips close at 7 pm Friday.

Tip now to avoid disappointment. You can tip for the whole season - and then change your tips weekly - to be sure.

Good luck,

Ben Warden
