Round 22 Tipsters' News, 2009

Congratulations to Garry Watt (Monash) and Scott Widdicombe (ext) who tipped all eight winners over the weekend. They win $130, payable on Wednesday, once the tribunal gives the all clear.

According to the tipping ratio statistics there were three major upsets and one minor upset over the weekend: Adelaide (48.6%) thrashed Carlton, the only consolation Fev kicking 5 and wining the goal kicking with 86 for the season. By losing, Carlton heads north to play Brisbane in an elimination final.

The second upset of the round was Brisbane (41.0%) who defeated Sydney, Brown finishing second in the aggregate goal kicking on 78. The biggest upset (statistically) was North (22.9%) who defeated Port in a no consequence game, on top of beating St Kilda last week, finishing off the season strongly. Finally the Western Bulldogs (41.0%) defeated the only in form side of the competition, Collingwood, throwing the finals series wide open. A touch of the wobbles?

The most controversial incident of the round was Lloyd (Essendon) aka the Velvet Sledgehammer, cleaning up a Hawthorn player Brad Sewell in a similar fashion to Buddy on Cousins. Expect the same result: 2 weeks.

St Kilda finished minor premiers and Geelong is the first team to win 18 or more games in three consecutive home and away seasons. The Bulldogs win elevates them to third on percentage and earns a qualifying final against second placed Geelong.

Meanwhile at the top of the Tipsters' Table we have a surprise winner. Congratulations to Garry Watt (Monash) who not only tipped eight, going for gold, but also snagged outright first. Brilliant!

Equal second are

  • Jane Bentley (Financial Operations, 258 Q),
  • Chris Bowden (c/o Baillieu Library), and
  • Peter Hawting (external).

Equal 5th/6th and still in the money are David Ross (Monash Maths) and Mahesh Sundar (Records).

Jane overcame Peter in a titanic struggle, Peter collapsing with a 4, after leading the comp for at least the last 9 weeks. Commiserations.

The average score for the round was 4.62, down 0.81 on last week. The RAT (Random Tipper) tipped 2 and 25 people (10%) didn't tip.

The tipping competition is over until next season. Thanks to all who played and helped throughout the season. See below for final dividends. Winners please supply bank details on Wednesday, once the tribunal was given the all clear.

    Here is the money:

Income: 233 tipsters (down 8 from 2007) at $30 each (up $5 from last year)$6990 (235 less RAT, Test Account)

    Outgoing:

First 11 rounds $270 per week, second 11 rounds $260 per week, total $5830 (Don't ask me how this happened ... 233 people missed it ...RDM?)

Top 5 Prize Pool $1160 divied up in the ratio 13:8:5:3:2 from 1st to 5th.

    So, first prize winner, Garry gets 13/31 x 1160 = $486.45

    Jane, Chris and Peter, 2nd to 4th, win 1/3 of (8+5+3/31) x 1160 = $199.57 ea

    David and Mahesh, equal 5th/6th, win 1/2 of 2/31 x 1160 = $37.42 ea

    Balance zero

May your team (or second team) go well in the finals.
