Comments
Lake Mountain between Cumberland Junction and Marysville offers a good
blast over high quality road climbing up through ferny forests to
tundra near the top. Views aren't that good at the top altough some
nice scenes can be glimpsed of nearby mountains on the way up but don't
expect any awe inspiring vistas.
The road is confidence inspiring because it has very little debris (bark,
twigs, etc) especially near the top when the tundra is the main flora about.
The road offers some high speed gently curving stretches requiring gentle
leans but one really needs to watch out for about 3 corners which come up
really fast and tight after you've been coaxed into opening right up.
Lake Mountain overall is quite gentle, not being overly twisty with plenty
of room to play. The beginner I was with enjoyed it much more than Reefton
Spur. Lake Mountain is a great addition to any planned day trip in the
Upper Yarra Catchment area in any event.
Hazards:Traffic is very bad on weekends from Marysville to the
summit during winter because Lake Mountain is a major cross country skiing
resort.
